Judge on Arrest of Rove: "It's about time!"

Six days ago I posted a diary entitled: "Four very brave Americans." It was a report about a retired minister and three members of the Des Moines Catholic Workers community who were cited for trespassing as they attempted to conclude a citizen's arrest of Karl Rove while he was delivering a speech at a GOP fundraiser in Des Moines. "Des Moines Catholic Worker: Second Arrest Attempt On Karl Rove In Iowa Leads To 4 Arrests."

As indicated by the title of the story about the matter, instead of arresting Rove, those four very brave Americans were, themselves, arrested for trespassing.

After the first defendent, Mona Shaw, explained to the arraigning judge that they were "...attempting to make a citizen's arrest of Karl Rove," this is what Polk County Fifth Judicial District Associate Judge William Price had to say about the matter: "Well, it's about time."

Here's the whole story!

Judge on Rove's citizen arrest: "It's about time."

Last Friday, police in Des Moines, Iowa arrested four people who attempted to make a citizens' arrest of former top White House aide Karl Rove, who was in town to speak at a GOP fundraiser. A retired minister and three members of the Des Moines Catholic Workers community were cited for trespassing. However, according to a press release, the judge presiding over the case praised their efforts:

[Mona] Shaw was the first called before Polk County Fifth Judicial District Associate Judge William Price.

After entering her plea, the judge asked Shaw, "Mamn, what were you doing at the Wakonda Country Club?"

"I was attempting to make a citizen's arrest of Karl Rove, your honor," Shaw answered.

"Well," the judge looked up and said, "it's about time."

This is what Laughing Vergil had to say over at Daily Kos, in conclusion, regarding the latest development in this ironic story:

It will be interesting to see what the trial brings out in this case - whether the arrests had any actual legal basis, or were just because people were bothering someone in a position of power.  The fact that Citizen's arrest is explicitly legal under the law in Iowa should make this a fascinating study into legal rights in the state, and (to an extent) in the United States.

Ah, yes! Every dog has their day. Especially one named Rove(r).

It's nice to be reminded that there are sane individuals in our judicial system.

Re: Judge on Arrest of Rove: (2.00 / 3)

I love this story. I'm glad someone is keeping on top of it.

One of my most fervent hopes is that someday the International Court will issue arrests warrants for Bush Co. It would be great if none of them dared leave the country for fear of arrest.

That's a great story.  No wonder Iowa has such a common-sense reputation.
