If not Biden...

I'm definitely of the school of thought that thinks Joe Biden definitely is the frontrunner, and perhaps the already-chosen candidate for Vice President in our party. We'll know soon enough.

But, I've also been a big proponent that former Florida Senator and Governor Bob Graham is a natural and virtually perfect fit with Obama, as well.

When I've brought this up on these progressive blogs, people have pointed to Graham's age, 71, (which makes him younger than McCain) as perhaps the primary reason why he'd never be "the one." But, Biden's 65. So, I've got to think that the Obama campaign may have, actually, taken a closer look at Graham than many may think.

And, if there's any argument to be made for choosing someone other than a Senator this cycle to accompany Obama on the ticket, that makes the selection of Graham all the more viable, IMHO.

As a former Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, he fills the foreign affairs and military requirements that many are clamoring for within the party, too.

He's still very highly regarded (I've heard the word, "beloved," used recently to describe the public's sentiment about Graham in the Sunshine State) within what certainly is one of the biggest--if not the biggest--of swing states this year, as well.

So, I'm thinking, if Biden's not the "real" choice, he could very well be a trial balloon for someone just like Graham.

Just read this one paragraph from Graham's Wiki Bio to get a sense of how well he meshes with Obama, philosophically:

As Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Graham opposed the War in Iraq for fear it would divert U.S. attention from the fight in Afghanistan. After carefully reviewing information and meeting with military leaders in February 2002, he decided the war would be a "distraction" that would end poorly. He continues to oppose the Iraq War today.

In any event, I'll be glad when all this V.P. speculation is over...but, it ain't over 'til it's over!

Graham is older than McCain. If I were Obama I'd pick someone who could win the presidency in 2016. While the goal should be winning the 2008 election, we should have goals of winning the 2012 and 2016 elections as well.

Re: If not Biden... (2.00 / 1)

Graham is older than McCain

Graham DOB: November 9, 1936
McCain DOB: August 29, 1936

McCain will be 72 on election day, Graham will be 71.

Oops (none / 0)

Thanks for your heads up play. I had thought that McCain had been born in 1937.

Re: If not Biden... (none / 0)

When was Wesley Clark's name stricken from the list and do you have any thoughts as to why?  He seems like a good fit to me, with maybe the drawback that then he couldn't be Secretary of Defense.

Then again, that never stopped Dick Cheney.

I agree 110%

I really don't think peering behind the curtian does much, but I would LOVE to know why Wes didn't rise to at least the top 5?

Evan Bayh instead of Wes Clark?

Man, I have to admit, I always though the  Obama camp was smart, but that is just dumb as a box of rocks to me.

On Nov 4th, we elected "the smart guy" and the world celebrated!

I wouldn't count Wes out just yet...no matter what we hear or have heard in the last few weeks...could be just one big headfake...

My Second Crack (none / 0)

Sorry that I was mistaken about the relative ages of Graham and McCain in a comment above, which was a distraction to my main point.

My main point was that Obama should choose a Vice President who has the potential and political skills to win the presidency in 2016. Bob Graham will be 80 in 2016, and probably be deemed too old to be elected president for a first term.
