Barack Obama Is Our Nominee

I'm back at the blogger tent and for some reason the whole, ya know -- convention -- is nowhere to be found on any television here. Luckily, David Dayen at Calitics is on the floor:

Dolores Huerta is making the nominating speech for Hillary Clinton right now.  People are pretty rapidly taking their seats. [...]

UPDATE: Obama is about to be nominated.  The applause for Obama's nomination is defeaning.  There will be no fight on this floor.  A registered Republican from Tennessee, Michael Wilson, is offering the nomination.  He's an Iraq war vet.  "I support Barack Obama because America needs a President with the strength, wisdom and courage to talk with our enemies and consult with our allies." [...]

UPDATE: Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a strong Hillary supporter in the primaries and co-chair of her campaign, is seconding Obama's nomination.  "No matter where we stood during the campaign, Democrats stand together today."  Seriously, the disunity idiots need to stuff it.

Update [2008-8-27 18:0:27 by Todd Beeton]:The roll call has begun with Alabama, which went for Obama 48-5. Interestingly, Arkansas went for Obama 47-0. Unity Ahoy!

I move that Senator Obama of Illinois be selected by acclamation as the nominee for the presidency of the United States.

The Big Tent just went nuts with applause. When Pelosi asked if there is a second, there was another cheer in the tent.

Barack Obama is our nominee.

Yes, from Caitecs:

Barbara Boxer and Art Torres announced that California passed on its roll call vote.  There's a very good reason for that.  First of all, the floor is being managed so that a certain state puts Obama over the top.  Second, if California voted now, less states would be part of the process, because when Obama reaches the threshold for nomination the roll call immediately ends.  So don't go reading anything into this.

UPDATE: Actually, Chairman Torres just explained it to me a little differently.  A lot of the superdelegates never checked in with their vote with him ahead of time.  He's legally required to go to their delegated proxies for a vote, and a lot of them didn't know about the voting either, so he would have had to announce significantly less votes than the 441 California is granted.  Anyway, that's what he told me.

We have too many delegates - there are too many states that "need" to speak before Illinois ends it.  If CA had cast their vote, despite the fact Clinton won here, there'd be so many Obama votes that states like AR couldn't have done their unity speech without nominating Obama before IL voted.

They'll pass to get to Wyoming and then Illinois will put him over the top...California, New York and the other states that passed (I'm guessing Texas will too) will then cast their votes for Obama.

They always work it to have the Home State put the nominee of the top.  There will probably not be enough votes, so Illinois will take a pass until they would be the ones to do it.   At that time, whatever state was up would cede the floor back to Illinois so that they can put 'their' person over the top.

Illinois passed.  Hopefully when the number gets close it will get sent back to them for the announcement putting it over the top.  Illinois should do it, not New York.

NBC keeps speculating that California passed because they gave more of their votes to Clinton. And they keep making fun of all the preambles for each state. Demonstrating that we don't need a liberal media, we need a media that takes their job seriously.

CNN.com is actually showing the roll call without any babbling bettys who don't know when to shut their pie holes.

The preambles are always goofy and stupid and for NBC to act like they don't know that is unexcusable.

Yup, watching it on CNN, just the showing what is.  This has always been my favorite part of the convention, particularly in years when we have a shot (in '72 the "next President of the US" stuff was a bad joke).  Hearing it said now, today, with a real chance of it happening, is a huge kick.

I followed the rollcall at Alegre's Corner.

It was interesting, to say the least. Not for the fainthearted, 4 or 5 very angry people provided a distinctly different take on the afternoons festivities. For those who are interested, the Diary is entitled:

Fun, to be fair it looks like more than one distinct, if universally disappointed, take.

Smart thing about having Hillary, obviously having a good time, put Obama over the top: no way they can maintain that she was reluctant. If they want to be productive they can focus on changing the DNC.

I can't believe an African-American man is the Democratic candidate for President.  I grew up in the era of the civil rights movement, just post the days of lynchings.  The days of Schwerner, Goodman, and Chaney.  The days of Rosa Parks and Medgar Evers.  The days when this would have seemed like someone's fairytale.  I really can't believe this just happened.  

America at its best is amazingly resilient and courageous.
